Dyslexia is a neurological condition in which the individual experiences difficulties in learning to read. The word Dyslexia has been derived from Greek words i.e. Dys ( poor or inadequate ) and Lexia (word or Language ). The earliest definition was provided by World Federation of Neurologists in year1968 as “A disorder in children who, despite conventional classroom experience, fail to attain the language skills of reading, writing, and spelling commensurate with their intellectual abilities”.

Since then there have been numerous studies and research about dyslexia. A very relatable and comprehensive definition was given by Sir Jim Rose in year 2009 as following -

“Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. Characteristic features of dyslexia are difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory and verbal processing speed. Dyslexia occurs across the range of intellectual abilities. It is best thought of as a continuum, not a distinct category, and there are no clear cut-off points. Co-occurring difficulties may be seen in aspects of language, motor co-ordination, mental calculation, concentration and personal organisation, but these are not, by themselves, markers of dyslexia.”

More than 10 million cases per year (India)
